What is "beach formal" wedding attire?

This suggests an elegant beach wedding -- so dress to impress, but also dress for the elements (sun, sand, and water). Anything you'd wear to a nice restaurant on a summer day is appropriate.  Suggestions for men include summer suits, cotton or linen shirts (no ties required), linen pants or khakis.  For women, lightweight, breathable fabrics like silk or chiffon are recommended.  Stilettos or high heels are not recommended. 

Please note that our ceremony and lunch will take place indoors, but we will move to the beach after lunch.  We suggest wearing or bringing comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.  As with most Southern California beaches, there is tar in the sand that will stain your shoes (or feet, should you decide to go barefoot).
